I've been reading When Asia Was the World by
Stewart Gordon. I've read it for 3 hours.
In one chapter, it was all about Xaunzang, who became a
Buddhist monk. In this chapter, it was a combination of his story and about
Buddhism. At the beginning, he and his brother ran to a rumored place that did
not end up how they wanted it to, so they went to another area in China.
Xuanzang learned from his brother about Buddhism. He started going to a
monastery and then became a true Buddhist monk. He left the monastery in China
to travel to learn more about the religion and to become enlightened. He then
went against the government to travel and became sacred after he refused a deal
and gave up eating. He got special treatment and was known as a "notable
teacher" wherever he traveled. When he wanted to go back to his homeland,
he wrote a letter to the emperor apologizing and summarized his trip. He
was forgiven and returned to China.
